The Swedish Data Protection Agency (IMY) has presented the five areas on which the agency will focus on in 2025. One of the areas that we at Hammarskiöld find particularly exciting is the processing of personal data in the workplace.
New, cheaper and simpler technologies have increased the possibilities for monitoring employees, such as digital monitoring of hybrid-working employees, real-time location tracking and camera surveillance of workplaces where employees are filmed. AI-tools that are more frequently implemented by employees in their work also generate large amounts of data (including personal data). Skills development and performance management have also become more sophisticated and data driven. In a turbulent world, employers’ need for background checks has also increased, and background checks have historically been a focus area of the IMY. In other words, the modern workplace raises numerous complex privacy questions and the IMY is obviously of the view that these questions deserve more attention.
We look forward to following developments in this highly current and ever-changing area. If you have any questions about data protection or employment law, do not hesitate to contact Anton Dolke Sjöberg or Malin von Heideken.
